FAQs | Ontario Trails Project
This page lists some of the questions I am asked, and a typical response. If you don’t see the answer to your question, please send me an email to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to answer your question
Q: I own a Magellan GPS. Can I load the Ontario Trails Project on my unit?
A: Yes! You will need to grab the ESRI Shape File, and follow these instructions
Q: I downloaded the ZIP file and did what you said, but Mapsource won’t start any more!
A: Most likely this is a case of the files did not go to the right folder. Make sure everything is extracted to C:\ONTTRAILS, pay particular attention that you didn’t create a subfolder inside ONTTRAILS – it will not work if you place the files at C:\ONTTRAILS\ONTTRAILS. A future map will be packaged with an installer which will correct this problem automatically
Q: Where are the trails? I installed the Garmin Map files but I don’t see anything when I open Mapsource!
A: The trail maps are provided as a separate map. You will need to select the Ontario Trails map from the drop down list in the top left portion of the screen.
Q: Why do I see double lines in Mapsource?
A: This is a side effect of the map creation process. Because the map is ‘transparent’ the preview map in Mapsource shows through. When you load it on your GPS, you will only see the one (correct) line.
* This has been fixed as of v0.6
Q: I sent the Ontario Trails map to my GPS, and now all my maps are gone! What happened !?
A: Most Garmin GPS units will *replace* the maps on the unit with maps sent from Mapsource. Before sending the Ontario Trails map to your gps, make sure you select the map regions from other map products you own as well – for example, you might want to have City Navigator and Ontario Trails – you would select the Ontario Trails map, then pick City Navigator from the drop down list of map products, and select the maps you also want installed from that screen. Once you have selected ALL the maps you want, then send the maps to your GPS or SD Card reader.
Q: I followed your map and it was way off! Why is that?
A: Trail information is provided by volunteers, with varying equipment and experience.
If you find a section that is inaccurate, please let me know. It would be great if you could send me a more accurate track log, but even if you can’t – please let me know about the problem area.
Q: Why do the trails look like dirt roads on my GPS
A: At the moment, I am not customizing the maps with TYP information. On most Garmin GPS units, lines of type “Trail” are represented as dashed lines similar in appearance to dirt roads. I do plan to customize the line segments in a future release of the trails project.
Q: Why don’t you have trail “xxxxxx” ?
A: Nobody has contributed data/tracklogs for that trail system yet. If you have any, please share!
